How to find BPM from an audio file
- Choose a song stored on your device.
- Use a section with a clear beat. Skip a quiet intro by changing the start time.
- Find BPM, then use the player and tap tempo to confirm the pulse.
No microphone, account, or upload is required. Decoding happens in your browser and analysis runs in a background worker. Format support depends on your browser and operating system.
What is BPM?
BPM means beats per minute. At 120 BPM, a beat lasts half a second. A tempo estimate is useful for practice, planning transitions, or choosing a playback speed—but a recording with tempo changes cannot be fully described by one number.
To practice more slowly, open the audio speed changer. To join clips afterward, use the audio merger.
When automatic tempo detection needs a second opinion
The detector looks for repeating changes in audio energy. Strong percussion is easier to measure than speech, sustained notes, or irregular rhythm. Half-time and double-time readings are normal ambiguities, not two different songs. The result does not identify musical key or edit your file’s tags.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find the BPM of a song?
Choose a music file, select a section with a steady beat, and click Find BPM. Review the estimate and its rhythm strength, then listen and tap along to check it.
Why does the BPM finder show half or double the expected tempo?
The same rhythm can be counted at different beat levels. A song heard at 70 BPM may also produce a 140 BPM estimate. Listen to the pulse and use tap tempo to choose the useful interpretation.
Is the detected BPM always accurate?
No. Tempo detection is an estimate. Steady percussion works best; speech, ambient sound, syncopation, and changing tempo may produce weak or incorrect results. Rhythm strength measures repetition, not a calibrated accuracy percentage.
Which files can I analyze?
Choose a browser-decodable audio file up to 50 MB, such as MP3, WAV, or M4A where supported. A maximum of 90 seconds from your chosen start point is analyzed. Files stay on your device.
