Photo sizes & cropping

How big is a 5×7 photo?

A 5×7 photo measures 5 × 7 inches, or 12.7 × 17.78 cm. It is the usual size for framed desk photos and greeting cards, and its shape crops less from a phone photo than a 4×6 does.

5×7 photo dimensions in inches, CM and MM

A 5×7 print uses the same paper in either orientation; only the width and height swap.

5×7-inch print: width × height by orientation
UnitPortraitLandscape
Inches5 × 7 in7 × 5 in
Centimeters12.7 × 17.78 cm17.78 × 12.7 cm
Millimeters127 × 177.8 mm177.8 × 127 mm
Aspect ratio5:7 (0.714)7:5 (1.4)

The metric values are exact because one inch is defined as 25.4 mm. A 5×7 card or frame insert is 5 × 7 inches; a “5×7 cm” requirement would be a much smaller 50 × 70 mm image, so always read the units.

What size is a 5×7 photo in pixels?

Multiply each side in inches by the print resolution. At 300 PPI, that is 5 × 300 = 1500 and 7 × 300 = 2100 pixels.

600 PPI3000 × 4200 px4200 × 3000 px

1500 × 2100 pixels (3.15 megapixels) is a good target for a detailed 5×7 print. Any recent phone or camera photo has far more than that, even after cropping. Smaller images can still print acceptably at 200 PPI, or 1000 × 1400 pixels, especially when viewed at arm’s length. Changing a file’s DPI tag does not add detail; only the pixels you have count.

How much of your photo is cropped at 5×7?

A landscape 5×7 print has a 1.4:1 shape. Most phone photos are 4:3 (1.33:1) and most cameras shoot 3:2 (1.5:1), so neither fills 5×7 exactly. The crop is smaller than many people expect.

Phone, 4:3 (4032 × 3024)4032 × 28804.8%, top and bottom4032 × 2688, 11.1% removed
Camera, 3:2 (6000 × 4000)5600 × 40006.7%, left and rightNone: 3:2 already fits
Square, 1:1 (3000 × 3000)3000 × 214328.6%, top and bottom3000 × 2000, 33.3% removed

Worked example: a 4032 × 3024 phone photo

Keep the full 4032-pixel width. A 7:5 crop needs a height of 4032 × 5 ÷ 7 = 2880 pixels, so 144 pixels are removed: 72 from the top and 72 from the bottom. The cropped image still has about 576 PPI at 7 inches wide, far more than a 5×7 print needs.

If you want to keep every part of the image instead, choose the print service’s “fit” or “border” option. The whole photo prints with thin white strips along two edges. Never stretch a photo to fill the paper; it distorts faces. The aspect ratio calculator works out crop sizes for any source.

Prepare a 5×7 photo for printing

  1. Start from the original.Use the camera file, not a messaging-app copy, which is often reduced in size. Check its pixel dimensions in the Image Metadata Viewer.
  2. Decide: crop or borders. For edge-to-edge prints, crop to 5:7 (portrait) or 7:5 (landscape) in a photo editor and position the crop so heads are not cut. For the full image, let the print service add borders.
  3. Resize only if asked. Most labs accept large files. If yours wants exact pixels, use the Image Resizer with the aspect ratio locked: 2100 px wide for a cropped landscape image gives 1500 px high.
  4. Set DPI if the lab requires it.The DPI Converter sets a 300-DPI tag on JPG or PNG without changing the pixels.
  5. Check the order preview.Confirm the 5×7 size, orientation and crop or fit setting. Borderless printing can trim a little extra from every edge.

A 5×7 has almost 46% more area than a 4×6, and a 13×18 cm print is about 2–3 mm larger in each direction, close enough to share most frames with a mat but not to swap prints in a tight sleeve. To compare 4×6 sizes in detail, read how big a 4×6 photo is.

Frequently asked questions

How big is a 5×7 photo in centimeters?

A 5×7-inch photo measures 12.7 × 17.78 cm, or 127 × 177.8 mm. Labs outside the US sometimes call it 13×18 cm, which is a slightly different size, so check their exact dimensions if you need a precise fit.

What is the size of a 5×7 photo in pixels?

At 300 pixels per inch, a portrait 5×7 photo is 1500 × 2100 pixels. At 200 PPI it is 1000 × 1400 pixels, and at 150 PPI it is 750 × 1050 pixels. Reverse the numbers for landscape.

What aspect ratio is a 5×7 print?

5:7 in portrait, or 7:5 in landscape, which is 1.4:1. That is between the 4:3 shape of most phone photos and the 3:2 shape of most camera photos, so both need a small crop to fill the paper.

Is 5×7 the same as A5?

No. A5 is 14.8 × 21 cm, about 5.83 × 8.27 inches, so it is larger than a 5×7 print in both directions and has a different shape.

Will a 4×6 photo print well at 5×7?

Only if the file has enough pixels. A file prepared at exactly 1200 × 1800 pixels for 4×6 has about 240 PPI once it fills a 5×7 print, which is usually acceptable. It also has a different shape, so expect a crop. Starting from the original photo is better.

Is a 5×7 the same as 7×5?

Yes. Both describe a print with a 5-inch side and a 7-inch side. 5×7 is usually written for portrait and 7×5 for landscape when a form asks for width × height.

Calculation note: pixels = inches × PPI; centimeters = inches × 2.54. Crop examples assume a centered crop and no extra borderless expansion. Inch values for metric sizes are rounded.

A 5×7 print checklist

  • Units: inches, not centimeters.
  • Shape: 5:7 portrait or 7:5 landscape.
  • Detail: 1500 × 2100 px for 300 PPI.
  • Crop: heads and edges checked.
  • Preview: borderless trim considered.
