How to compare two texts

  1. Paste the original on the left and the changed version on the right, or open a text file on each side.
  2. Choose Compare text. Removed text is highlighted in red on the left; added text is green on the right.
  3. Switch to Inline view for a single column, or show only the changed lines in a long document.

Reading the result

Each row lines up a line from the original with its match in the changed text. A changed line appears on both sides with the specific words highlighted. A removed line appears only on the left, and an added line only on the right. Line numbers refer to each original input, so you can find the spot in your document.

Private comparison for sensitive documents

Many online diff checkers send both texts to a server, and some save them under a shareable link. This tool runs the comparison in your browser, so contract drafts, personal letters and unreleased code stay on your device.

Tips for cleaner comparisons

Text copied from a PDF can have line breaks in different places from the original document, which makes every line look changed. Run both versions through Remove Line Breaks with “Keep paragraphs” first. For structured data, format both JSON documents with the JSON formatter using the same indentation before comparing. To check that two files are byte-for-byte identical, compare their hashes with the checksum generator.

Frequently asked questions

How does this text compare tool find differences?

It compares the two texts line by line using the Myers difference algorithm, the method behind git diff. Lines that changed are paired up, then compared word by word so you can see exactly which words were added or removed.

Can I ignore case or extra spaces?

Yes. “Ignore case” treats Apple and apple as the same. “Ignore whitespace” treats runs of spaces and tabs as one space and ignores spaces at the start and end of a line, which helps when comparing text that was reformatted.

Is the text I compare uploaded?

No. Both texts are compared in this browser tab. Nothing is sent to SuperUtils or saved, which makes the tool suitable for contracts, drafts and code you cannot share.

Can I compare two files?

Yes. Open a plain-text file such as TXT, CSV, JSON, Markdown, HTML or source code on either side, up to 10 MB each. Word and PDF files are not plain text; copy their text and paste it instead.

Why are some lines shown as removed and added instead of changed?

When a block has more removed lines than added lines, or the reverse, the extra lines have no partner, so they are shown as removed or added. Very different texts with more than 6,000 changed lines are shown as one replaced block to keep the page responsive.
