Which PDFs need compressing to 500KB?

A 500KB limit is common on job sites, school and university systems, support portals and expense tools, and it is a sensible size for emailing a document to many people. The usual problem files are résumés and portfolios with photos, reports exported with full-resolution images, documents scanned on an office copier, and PDFs assembled from phone photos. In all of these, the images are the bulk of the file, so compressing them brings the size down a lot while the text stays exactly as it was.

Keep text sharp: the two methods

Compress images only leaves text, fonts, links and vector graphics untouched and re-encodes photos and scans as JPEG at a lower quality or resolution. Use it for anything made on a computer. Scan-style turns each whole page into a JPEG image. It is the only way to shrink a PDF that is already one big scan per page beyond what image compression achieves, and it guarantees the size, but the text can no longer be selected or searched. The automatic method uses scan-style only when the first method cannot reach 500KB.

To reduce a file further without losing readability, remove pages you do not need, or remove hidden document properties with the PDF metadata remover if you are also concerned about what the file reveals.

Frequently asked questions

How can I reduce my PDF file size to 500KB?

Use the compressor above with the 500KB target. It optimizes the PDF, then compresses the images inside it until the file fits, and only converts pages to images if necessary. The size is measured on the actual output, so the download is guaranteed to be under 500KB when the result shows a check mark.

Does compressing a PDF to 500KB affect print quality?

Text and vector graphics print exactly as before when they are kept. Photos are stored at a lower resolution, which is usually invisible on screen and in office printing but can show in large, high-quality prints. Keep the original for professional printing.

Will the text in my PDF still be selectable?

Yes, whenever the target can be reached by compressing the images inside the PDF. Text, fonts and vector drawings are not touched in that case. Only when the images alone cannot get the file small enough does the automatic method turn each page into an image, which makes text unselectable. The result tells you which method was used, and you can force either one with the Method menu.

How long does compression take?

A few seconds for most documents. Large scanned PDFs can take a minute or more, because the tool tests several quality levels and measures each result. The status line shows each step, and you can cancel at any time.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened, compressed and saved by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to SuperUtils, which matters for ID documents, certificates, bank statements and medical records.
