How to compress a PDF to 1MB

  1. Choose the PDF; the 1MB target is ready.
  2. Compress. Most documents only need their images re-encoded to get under 1MB, which keeps everything else exactly as it was.
  3. Check and download. The result shows the size in bytes and a preview of the first page.

What fits in 1MB?

Typical results at 1MB (actual results depend on the document)
DocumentAt 1MB
Presentation or report with many photosFits with text, links and vector charts untouched
10–25 scanned pagesUsually fits in color
Phone photos of documents, up to about 15 pagesFits after the photos are resized
100+ scanned pagesMay need grayscale, scan-style or splitting

Is 1MB 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes?

Both are used. Storage makers and most websites count 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, while Windows and some older systems count 1,048,576 bytes (strictly a mebibyte, MiB). This tool aims for 1,000,000 bytes or less, so the result passes both. That is why a file Windows shows as “0.98 MB” can still be rejected by a form that counts 1,000,000 bytes, and why the exact byte count is shown here.

What usually makes a PDF bigger than 1MB

Almost always images: full-resolution photos dropped into a Word or PowerPoint file, pages scanned in color at 300 or 600 DPI, or phone photos of documents saved straight into a PDF. A 12-megapixel phone photo alone can be 3 to 5 MB. Fonts can add a few hundred kilobytes when they are embedded in full, and some apps add hidden page thumbnails and editing data. The compressor removes the hidden extras, re-encodes the images at the best quality that fits, and leaves fonts and text alone.

For attachments, 1MB is comfortable for any email service. If you are sending to a strict portal, use a smaller target such as 500KB to be safe.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a PDF smaller than 1MB?

Drop it into the tool above with the 1MB target and select Compress PDF. The tool optimizes the file, compresses the images inside it to the highest quality that fits, and only converts pages to images as a last resort. The download is checked to be at most 1,000,000 bytes.

Will links and bookmarks still work?

Yes, when text is kept, which covers most documents: links, bookmarks, form fields and the document outline are carried over unchanged. If scan-style conversion is needed, each page becomes a picture, so links and form fields are lost; the result tells you if that happened.

Will the text in my PDF still be selectable?

Yes, whenever the target can be reached by compressing the images inside the PDF. Text, fonts and vector drawings are not touched in that case. Only when the images alone cannot get the file small enough does the automatic method turn each page into an image, which makes text unselectable. The result tells you which method was used, and you can force either one with the Method menu.

Can I compress several PDFs at once?

This tool works on one PDF at a time, so you can check each result before downloading. Compressing one file takes from a few seconds to about a minute for large scans.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened, compressed and saved by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to SuperUtils, which matters for ID documents, certificates, bank statements and medical records.
